Davidson Medical Ministries was established in 1991 as a private, not-for-profit free clinic by Dr. James Slyman. The clinic opened its doors in February 1992 to serve adult uninsured patients by providing basic medical, dental, and pharmacy services. Care was delivered by professional and nonprofessional volunteers on Monday and Thursday evenings.
Davidson Medical Ministries operates as a faith-based clinic, grounded in the belief that everyone deserves access to basic healthcare and that we are called to be the hands and feet of God in Davidson County, NC. Over time, the clinic expanded beyond its original schedule and services. It transformed from a free clinic to a charitable clinic, employing paid staff while still relying on volunteers.
In 2012, Davidson Medical Ministries partnered with Kintegra Health to incorporate a federally qualified health center component. This partnership allowed us to serve underinsured individuals with Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance.
In 2019, we began a strategic planning process with more than 100 community stakeholders, leading to the launch of the DC Connect program in 2022. In December 2023, North Carolina adopted Medicaid transformation, followed by the tailored plan option in July 2024. These changes significantly impacted the landscape of direct medical care.
As a result, in October 2024, we transitioned to a Community Health Organization model aligned with North Carolina’s Medicaid transformation. Kintegra, our Federally Qualified Health Center partner for over twelve years, now oversees clinical operations at our two clinic locations. This partnership ensures that patients experience continuity in their care while we focus on connecting Davidson County residents to resources and specialty services that promote their well-being.
While many things have changed, our purpose remains steadfast: to provide better access to healthcare for the residents of Davidson County, North Carolina. Our mission is to support individuals in obtaining quality healthcare and to connect them with vital community resources that address the root causes of health disparities.
